Striking is an essential part of self-defence. In Krav Maga, we use various techniques – kicks, punches, elbows, knees, etc., to protect ourselves. These techniques allow us to strike in various directions, at various distances and heights.
The straight punch is for medium distance (arm’s length) when the threat is in front of us.
A good straight punch is all about efficiency, balance, and control—not just raw power. You don’t need to be a muscular gym rat to perform an effective punch. Many of our best strikers over the years have been smaller, but they used good technique.
These five tips will help you punch faster, with more power, and more safely.
1. Start From the Ground
Power begins at your feet. Push lightly off the ball of your rear foot and let that energy travel upward through your legs and hips. A punch thrown only with the arm will always be weaker.
2. Rotate the Hips and Shoulders
Turn your hips and shoulders together as you punch. This rotation adds power and keeps your movement connected, rather than stiff or disconnected.
3. Keep the Punch Straight and Relaxed
Drive your fist directly toward the target, elbow tucked in. Stay relaxed until the moment of impact—tight muscles slow you down and reduce snap.
4. Protect Your Other Hand (Defence)
Your non-punching hand should stay up to protect your face. This builds good defensive habits and keeps you balanced while striking.
5. Snap Back to Guard (Recoil).
After impact, bring your fist straight back to your guard. A fast return is just as important as the punch itself and helps prevent counterattacks.
Train your straight punch slowly at first, focusing on technique and control. Speed and power will come naturally as your mechanics improve—especially when practicing safely with proper supervision and equipment.
