People living in cities are increasingly using Uber to get from place to place. In fact, it has become so common that “uber” has become a verb (Let’s just “uber” to work). Like all forms of travel, we want to be safe. Here are eight safety tips for travelling on Uber.

Verify the car and driver before getting in – Check that the license plate, car make/model, and driver photo match the information in your app. Ask the driver, “Who are you picking up?” instead of saying your name first.
Share your trip details – Use Uber’s “Share My Trip” feature (or similar) to send your route and estimated arrival time to a friend or family member.
Sit in the back seat – This gives you personal space, allows you to exit from either side, and keeps you at a safer distance from the driver.
Trust your intuition/instincts – If something feels wrong—whether it’s the route, the driver’s behaviour, or the condition of the car—end the ride or request to be let out in a safe, public location.
Don’t share personal information – Keep conversation polite but minimal; don’t reveal your home address, daily routine, or personal details beyond what’s necessary for the ride.
Position yourself to access an exit – Sit on the passenger side of the back seat so you can easily exit from either side if needed. Keep your bag or belongings on your lap, not in the trunk.
Control your personal space – If the driver reaches back toward you or makes physical contact, use your voice first—loud, firm commands like “Stop!” or “Let me out!” Keep one hand free to open the door or block unwanted contact.
Have a simple defensive action in mind – If physically attacked, aim for fast, effective strikes to vulnerable targets (eyes, throat, groin) to create a window to escape.
