With home invasions on the rise, the urgency for preparedness is more pressing than ever. According to Global News, the Toronto Police Forces have reported 1,721 break-ins as of March 17, 2024, marking a 31.5% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Criminals, driven by the lure of cash or small items to resell, are becoming more daring. Some are even targeting car keys to steal vehicles.
The most alarming cases involve criminals who confine and assault homeowners. In such a scenario, having specific safety measures in place can be a lifesaver. If possible, the best course of action is to vacate the house as quickly as possible.
Empower yourself with these three safety tips to protect yourself during a home invasion:
Secure Entry Points – Ensure that doors and windows are properly locked at all times, especially at night. Reinforce doors with deadbolts and, if possible, use security bars on windows. Consider installing a peephole or security cameras at entry points to identify anyone approaching.
Create a Safe Room—Designate a room in your home with a lockable door and a phone. Keep a charged phone and emergency supplies in this room. If an intruder enters and you cannot escape the house, retreat to this room and call the authorities.
Install an Alarm System—A security system with alarms, cameras, and motion sensors can deter intruders. Some systems can be monitored 24/7, giving you an extra layer of protection. Ensure your system has visible signs or stickers that warn potential burglars.
Remember, in addition to these tips, practicing an emergency plan with everyone in your household can provide a sense of reassurance and help everyone stay calm and respond appropriately in a crisis.
