Striking is fundamental to self-defence, and punches are among the basic and most effective strikes. One of the more frequently asked questions students ask is, "How do I increase my punching power?"
Here are three ways to improve your punching power:

1. Improve Explosive Strength—Incorporate weight training exercises such as dumbbell presses, squats, and cable pulls (back) to develop core strength. Plyometric exercises like medicine ball slams and push-ups will also help build explosive power.
2. Develop Your Technique—Proper punching mechanics are the key to maximizing power. You don’t have to be big to hit hard. Focusing on hip rotation, weight transfer, and engaging your entire body can generate significant power.
3. Increase Speed and Coordination – Fast punches hit harder. Use resistance bands, focus mitt training, and reaction drills to improve hand speed and precision. The faster you accelerate through the punch (and recoil), the more force you generate.
Again, you don’t have to be a big person to strike hard. Many of our most proficient strikers over the years have been smaller people. We work on improving striking impact and precision during classes and are happy to share any out-of-class exercises you would like to incorporate into your workout routine.
